Brownie Fair Play Activities: Fun Games and Ideas to Teach Good Sportsmanship

Updated: Dec 28, 2023

Brownies, the young members of the Girl Scouts, learn important life skills through activities and games. One of the most crucial skills they learn is good sportsmanship. Good sportsmanship is all about playing fair, being respectful, and having a positive attitude. In this blog post, we'll explore some fun games and activities that Brownies can play to learn about good sportsmanship and earn the Fair Play badge.

Pass the Parcel

This is a classic game that teaches good sportsmanship by promoting teamwork and fair play. To play, you'll need a small prize wrapped in multiple layers of wrapping paper. The girls sit in a circle and pass the parcel around while music plays. When the music stops, the girl holding the parcel unwraps one layer. This continues until someone unwraps the final layer and wins the prize. The game teaches the girls to cheer on their friends and accept the outcome of the game with grace.

Sack Race

This game teaches the girls to have a positive attitude and support their peers. Divide the girls into two teams and have them each line up in a row with a burlap sack. The girls must hop to the finish line while staying inside their sack. The team that finishes first wins. This game teaches the girls to encourage each other and celebrate their successes, even if they don't win.

Relay Races

Relay races are a great way to promote teamwork and good sportsmanship. Divide the girls into two or more teams and have them line up in a row. Each team member must run to a designated spot and back before tagging the next team member. The first team to complete the relay wins. This game teaches the girls to take turns, communicate, and work together.

Tug-of-War

This game teaches the girls to accept the results of the game and have a positive attitude. Divide the girls into two teams and have them each grab an end of a long rope. The teams then pull the rope until one team pulls the other team across a designated line. This game teaches the girls to accept the outcome of the game and congratulate their opponents on a good effort.

Obstacle Course

An obstacle course is a fun and challenging way to teach girls about fair play and taking turns. Set up an obstacle course using cones, hula hoops, and other items. Divide the girls into teams and have them take turns navigating the course. The team that completes the course the fastest wins. This game teaches the girls to wait their turn and to cheer on their friends.

Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is a great way to teach girls about teamwork and collaboration. Create a list of items for the girls to find around a specific area or park. Divide the girls into teams and have them work together to find all the items on the list. The team that finds all the items first wins. This game teaches the girls to work together, communicate, and support each other.

Sports and games not only teach good sportsmanship, but also promote social skills, teamwork, and communication. Brownies who learn these skills through play will be better equipped to navigate the challenges of life with grace and positivity.
