Junior Coding Basics Badge Workbook

I set up this booklet so you don't need a computer for the meeting. However, if you're able, I've added some online resources to supplement the booklet.
One of the best coding resources for kids is Code.org. I recommend introducing the girls to this site, because the fun and engaging lessons will get them hooked on coding!
Pages 1-2: Algorithms
If you want to supplement this with hands-on activities, have the girls go to Code.org and play lessons 1, 2, and 3. These will get the girls familiar with coding with Scratch and understanding algorithms.
Pages 3-4: Simplify Algorithms with Loops
Visit Code.org and complete the first Loops lesson to better understand how loops can simplify your algorithms.
Pages 5-6: Conditionals
You can also show a short video that explains IF / ELSE statements in more detail with an example.
If the girls need help coming up with ideas for games, here are a few good ones:
- Go Fish (card game)
- Slap Jack (card game)
- War (card game)
- Uno (the condition is a Draw 4 card)
- Red Rover
Pages 7-9
If you want to share more about the famous female computer scientists, you can find short videos about the 4 women I mention in the workbook. Either watch them beforehand to add more facts about these great women, or play one or more of them for the troop.
- Ada Lovelace (video)
- Annie Easley (video)
- Grace Hopper (video)
- Katherine Johnson (video)
