Daisy Shapes in Nature Badge Workbook

For this meeting you can either hold it outside, do portions of the book outside, or use the online pictures below (Page 5) to cover outdoor shapes.
Page 1
This is an introduction to shapes in nature. A simple image of a house and trees will have the girls start thinking about the everyday items around us in terms of their shapes.
An additional question you can ask on this page is something like "What other shapes do we see in nature that aren't on this page?"
Page 2
The shape hunt should ideally be done outdoors. Find a location where you can go for a walk or just sit and observe. Have the girls use tally marks to keep track of the shapes they see.
After a certain amount of time, have the girls share how many of each shape they found. Also have them point to or describe what they saw. Sharing will help them see what others see.
Page 3
Here we move into patterns. Have the girls define a pattern. See if anyone has a pattern on their clothes. Talk about where we find patterns: on clothes, on furniture, wallpaper, etc.
You can then tell them that patterns also appear in nature! The honeycomb and leaf are great examples. Can they name any others?
Page 4
Talk about additional examples.
Page 5
If you're able to go on a walk, try to find patterns. If you're unable to get outside, have the girls look at some of the pictures below. Have them point out some patterns and draw or write about them.
Page 6
Have fun with patterns. Have the girls draw a pattern on the unicorn. It could be the colors they use, or just lines and shapes. Encourage them to get creative.
