Brownie Shapes in Nature Badge Workbook

For this badge, I recommend getting outside. Try to incorporate nature into your meeting to have real-life examples of shapes in nature.

This page is all about natural objects.
Engage the girls by having them point out which are living and which are non-living, and which are in the ocean, in the sky, or on land. Can they name other natural objects?
Page 2
Either as a group or individually, have the girls list natural objects.
If you're able to do this outside, have them observe their surroundings to see the natural objects around them.
They should write down the object, then note whether it's living/non-living, big/small, and where it's found.
Have the troop share what they found with each other.

Have the girls choose a few items to search for. From there, graph how many of each item they find on their hunt!
If you're not able to go on a nature hunt outdoors, try pulling up a YouTube video of someone going on a walk.
Pages 4, 5, and 6
Next is all about symmetry and some different symmetrical objects in nature. We dive into the spiderweb and the parts of the spiderweb. The girls will do a paper plate spiderweb craft with yarn.
I recommend prepping the plates with the cuts before the meeting. This will speed things up a bit.
You can also show a short video all about spiderwebs.
Pages 7-8
Next, the girls will learn about a certain kind of pattern: a tessellation. They'll make their own. Prepare small squares for the girls to cut; a 3 inch by 3 inch square should be a good size.
The girls will then trace that shape onto either poster board or a sheet of blank paper.

Play bird bingo. Since all areas of the country have different birds in different seasons, play bird bingo with where you see birds or what the birds are doing! You'll definitely need to be outdoors for this activity.
