Brownie Fair Play Badge Workbook

Fair Play

Download the workbook and use the resources below to complete this badge!

To complete this badge using this booklet, you'll need a few decks of cards.

Page 1

Here we talk about games we know. Have the girls talk about each game and some rules they know about it. Bring up some ways or experiences where people weren't playing by the rules. How did that make them feel?

Page 2

We learn a new game called SNAP. You can find the rules here: How to play SNAP (Bicycle Cards).

Have the girls break up into groups. Have them read the rules and play the game. After all groups have played for a little while, regroup. What did they observe? What rules were important to follow?

Page 3

Learn about women in sports.

Have the girls talk about what sports they like to watch on TV. Who plays those sports? If the teams are mostly men's teams, talk about the women's equivalents.

To dive deeper, you can also show a short video about Title IX.

Page 4

Teamwork is so important in sports but also in everyday life. You'll work in teams in school, in sports, and in a job.

Have the girls brainstorm what makes a good teammate. Have them write down some attributes and share. Here are some ideas to get the girls started:

  • Positive attitude
  • Plays by the rules
  • Cheers on teammates
  • A good sport regardless of the outcome (the opposite of a sore loser or sore winner)
  • Takes care of team equipment

Page 5

This is where the girls can get up and get active (or not!). There are a few options for being part of a team. If you're able to play outside, you can do races or traditional games like soccer. If not, you can try charades or even a simple activity where they have to work in teams.

Have the girls use the attributes of a good teammate from the previous page when they play their game. Have them reflect on how that made playing more fun!

If you don't like the option on the page, here are some more games that can easily be done in your meeting area:

  • Red Light, Green Light
  • Simon Says
  • Duck Duck Goose
  • Musical Chairs
  • Hot Potato
  • Scavenger Hunt

Page 6

Games are all scored differently. Here we talk about different games and how they're scored. Below is the answer key. Feel free to add more games you know: cricket, rugby, lacrosse, etc.

Answer key: how different sports are scored

Pages 7 and 8

Now have the girls take what they learned and put it into practice with a mini Field Day or Carnival. Have them choose games with different attributes: not all physical games, not all mental games. A nice variety will make sure everyone feels they can win and shine.

On the last page, have the girls reflect on what they learned. What will they do to make sure they play fairly in the future?
